Cubble Head is easily accessible from the A1 and the M1.

From the A1, turn West at Bedale on to the A684 towards Leyburn and Hawes. Cubble Head is 26 miles - about 40 minutes drive from the A1 exit. This is a delightful drive along the scenic Wensleydale valley. There are a succession of pretty villages - many with real character and ancient chuches, village greens, attractive cottages etc. There are also lovely views to the opposite side of the valley and Castle Bolton. Many villages have a tea room or pub so there is no shortage of refreshment stops! Particularly good places for a break might be: Leyburn - 3 village squares, good shopping, plenty of tea rooms

West Witton - charming village with the famous Wensleydale Heifer gastro pub, Aysgarth- the well known triple waterfall is just off the main road. Tea rooms. Bainbridge - village green with stocks (!) , new Archimedes screw on the river, pub and tea room.

From the M6, turn East at Junction 37 on the A684 towards Sedburgh and Hawes. Cubble Head is 21 miles from the M6 junction - about 45 minutes drive. Again, this is a very scenic journey. The countryside is a little wilder and more dramatic than further east. You pass through Sedburgh, England's book town and this is a lovely place for a wander round with no shortage of tea shops, gift shops and, unsurprisingly, book shops. The Sedburgh fells provide a magnificent scenic backdrop to the town.

Further on, the road winds through hamlets and sheep fields and there are views to the north of Wild Boar Fell (where allegedly the last wild boar in England was killed). The Pennine scenery here is wild and spectacular and the road is delight to drive. As you climb higher and approach Hawes, you pass very close to the Settle-Carlisle railway which sometimes has steam trains. The road then winds through the hamlet of Appersett where there is an art gallery and finally into Hawes. Cubble Head is then just minutes away. Perhaps the most scenic route of all is along the B6265 north of Skipton.* This is a good route if you are coming from the Leeds area or the M62 but requires time and patience which will be amply rewarded. This route passes Rylstone, made famous by "Calendar Girls" and then just bypasses Grassington, a delightful village famed for its Arts festival and Linton where there is an ancient church. Soon the magnificent Upper Wharfedale valley opens out and you will pass the overhanging limestone cliff at Kilnsey and then wind through Kettlewell, Starbotton and Buckden. These are timeless Dales villages each with their own character. All have pubs and most have tearooms as well. At Buckden there is a choice - left along a very minor road called Oughtershaw Road or right towards Leyburn - a slightly longer route. Oughtershaw Road will take you past 'The George' at Hubberhulme, a pub which dates from 1600. Hubberhulme Church has pews made by mousyThompson - a Yorkshire joiner who carved his trademark mouse into everything he made.

You then wind along the river valley passing the ancient and wonderfully named hamlets of Yockenthwaite, Deepdale and Beckermonds. Look carefully and you will see a Bronze age stone circle on the right. The river here tumbles down limestone pavements and is a delight. Eventually you will emerge on Cam High Road which is a Roman Road directly above Hawes. Prepare for a very steep descent down to Hawes along Beggarman'Road! *Please note this route is not advisable if there is any risk of snow or ice and does require patience as much of it is single track with passing places.
